The purpose of this book is to make a collection of what has been said of the Romanians and their country by writers in English, those of other days and of our own time. It is, of course, a fact that the modern Kingdom of Romania did not exist before the reign of Carol I; but the political happenings which occurred nunder him and his successors are mere episodes in the history of a people that has for centuries been established in those regions, all too frequently under alien domination.
